Walking

By Betty Briars
1) Now I have taken thirteen steps, unaided, I qualify as a seasoned walker. So for those of you unsure how to place one foot in front of the other, here's is my 'How To' guide. Enjoy.
2) To warm up, begin by locating a wheel mounted item capable of supporting your balance as you move forward. Slowly ease yourself to standing behind the object and stretch off at your starting point.
3) Now, GO! As the wheels begin to turn, allow your weight to come forward and encourage your legs to begin a pendulum like motion of 'right, left, right, left'. And whatever you do, DON'T LOOK DOWN.
4) Stay focused and maintain this method of propulsion as you traverse the floor. Once you have arrived at your destination, you have completed the warm up. Well done champ!
5) Now for the main event. No...no...don't panic! It's exactly the same, we're just going to lose the trolley.
Stick with me. You'll be fine.
6) Step away from the support and carefully reach out with one foot.
(I usually opt for the right foot first, but it's really your call).
7) Now bring forward the other foot and transfer your weight to it - once in your stride hit that pendulum motion once again.
8) Now you've found your feet, start to pick up the pace.
Stand tall, smile, be confident and let your legs do the talking.
(NB Do not let the whooping and cheering of nearby adults put you off.
Tune them out and press on.)
9) Now hit the nearest available surface safe in the knowledge that
YOU CAN WALK!!
Await imminent treats and cuddles.
You're welcome.
